Forever Within The Numbered Days
"There are infinite numbers between 0 and 1. There's 0.1 and 0.12 and 0.112, and an infinite collection of others. Of course, there is a larger infinite set of numbers between 0 and 2, or between 0 and a million. Some infinities are bigger than other infinities. A writer we used to like taught us that. There are days, many of them, when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I'm likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful."
This is one of my favorite lines of all time, from The Fault in Our Stars. Life is truly unpredictable—one moment you are soaring in the sky, and the next, you plummet into the dungeons of despair. But within those moments, within the beginning and end of every relationship, every journey, every struggle, there exists an infinite number of smaller moments. And to the people I've come across in my life, I am so thankful for the little infinities of time I’ve shared with you all.
I used to wonder why life brings people into our lives if they aren’t meant to stay forever. Then I realized, they don’t need to be here forever, because "forever" is so subjective. With some people, the few weeks you spend together feel more like forever than a lifetime spent with others. So, what is forever, really? Forever is a myth, because everything has a definite starting and ending point. We are all stuck in between, hoping something will last, even though deep down, we know it won’t. Aren’t we all, in some way, constantly living in denial?
Because in the end, all we can say is- " You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful."
